iMSPORT.TV – Indonesia’s sport climbing coach, Hendra Basir, said his team is optimistic about securing at least two to three gold medals at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, which will take place in mid-December.
According to him, the target was set based on evaluations of the national athletes’ performances in the three contested events: speed, lead, and boulder for both men and women.
“Our potential is at 87 percent, the host (Thailand) is at 84 percent, and Singapore is at 76 percent for men’s speed, so it is still very competitive,” Hendra said when contacted in Jakarta.
He explained that for the SEA Games, most of the climbers selected are young athletes, in accordance with the regulations set by the organizers.
These athletes rank fourth and below based on training times when compared with their senior counterparts.
The same applies to women’s speed, as well as men’s and women’s boulder and lead events.
Regarding the chances, Indonesia’s women’s speed event has an even greater potential to secure gold.
He mentioned athletes such as Puja Lestari, Susan Nurhidayah, and Naura Jasmine, who are performing at a stable level with a winning probability reaching 91 percent.
One of the strongest competitors, he added, comes from the host nation, Thailand.

In the men’s lead event, competition is expected to be tighter. Hendra noted that Thailand holds a higher probability than other countries, followed by Singapore and Malaysia.
Even so, he believes Indonesia still has a chance.
“Everyone still has the potential to win gold, but the probability percentages do differ,” he said.
In the women’s boulder category, Indonesian athletes also have strong chances, although Thailand and Singapore remain the favorites with probabilities reaching up to 88 percent.
The coaching team believes performance stability will be a key factor in that event.
Seeing the varied competitive landscapes across each event, Hendra emphasized that the team’s current focus is maintaining consistent performance while refining strategies ahead of their departure to Thailand.
Hendra stated that the target of 2–3 gold medals remains realistic given the athletes’ progress during the national training camp.
He also stressed that opportunities remain open in all events and that the athletes are ready to maximize their potential to achieve the best results at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.
