iMSPORT.TV – Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen made a major breakthrough on her US Open debut, defeating 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova on Monday (Aug 25, local time).

The Jakarta-born player secured a hard-fought victory, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over Kudermetova in the first round of the 2025 US Open. This triumph at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing Meadows, New York marked the first main-draw win for an Indonesian player at a Grand Slam tournament in 22 years.

Her success is a historic moment for both Indonesian tennis and Janice personally. As a reward, she earned USD 154,000 (IDR 2.5 billion) for advancing to the Round of 64 at the US Open 2025.

Janice’s feat also made her the first Indonesian tennis player to appear in a Grand Slam main draw in 22 years, following in the footsteps of Angelique Widjaja, who reached the second round of Wimbledon in 2003.

In the next round, the 23-year-old will face 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu of Great Britain. Raducanu advanced after defeating Japanese player Ena Shibahara in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

The Round of 64 clash between Janice Tjen and Emma Raducanu is scheduled for Wednesday, August 28, 2025.
