iMSPORT.TV – Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir stated that the Indonesian contingent for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand is targeting maintaining its third-place finish, as achieved in the final medal standings at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games.
“We want our target (at the 2025 SEA Games) to remain the same, at least achieving third place again (as at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games),” said Erick in a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday.
He acknowledged that this target will not be easy to achieve because many of Indonesia’s leading sports in previous SEA Games will not be contested at the 2025 SEA Games.
He noted that of the 87 events that contributed to Indonesia’s gold medal tally at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games, 41 will not be contested in Thailand.
Therefore, the current chance of winning gold medals is around 46, still far below the number needed to maintain third place.
“If we want to rank third, we need 82 to 90 gold medals,” he said.
Minister of Youth and Sports: Indonesia’s Target at the 2025 SEA Games is to Maintain Third Place
He explained that, based on the preliminary evaluation results, his team detected the potential for an additional 32 gold medals. However, even if we add in the previous winnings (46 gold medals), it still wouldn’t secure a third-place finish.
Therefore, his party will immediately discuss medal targets with all federation officials.
“Because the reality today is (we haven’t been able to achieve) third place,” he said.
The Minister of Youth and Sports added that he will review the plans of each federation official to re-establish additional medal targets in the remaining 1.5 months until the 2025 SEA Games.
Also present as speakers at the press conference were the Chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), Raja Sapta Oktohari, and the Chef de Mission (CdM) of the Indonesian Contingent for the 2025 SEA Games, Bayu Priawan Djokosoetono.
