SEA Games Thailand: Ministry of Youth and Sports Seeks Additional Medals to Achieve Top-3 Place

iMSPORT.TV – The review and synchronization process for the national training camp results ahead of the 2025 SEA Games was completed on October 31st.

However, the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ review team is still working to identify potential additional medals, ensuring Indonesia’s chances of finishing in the top three, as targeted by the government, remain open.

This process involves in-depth discussions with various sports’ governing bodies (PB), including comparing national training camp results since the 2024 Olympics with the achievements of competing countries in each event.

Surono, Deputy for Sports Performance Improvement at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, explained that measurable sports, such as athletics and swimming, are easier to analyze. Team sports and martial arts require longer evaluation time.

Technically, Indonesia won 87 gold medals at the 2023 SEA Games. However, several top events will not be contested at the 2025 SEA Games, potentially leaving Indonesia without 41 gold medals from its previous total.

However, there are additional opportunities from events previously not contested in Cambodia, which are now back, with a potential of 32 gold medals.

So, our realistic medal opportunity is 78 gold medals: 46 medals from Cambodian sports and a potential 32 medals from Thailand,” said Surono.

However, we still need additional medals to meet the target, as Indonesia needs approximately 13.84 to 15.90 percent of the total 577 medals up for grabs across 52 sports to finish in the top three,” he added.

Referring to these percentages, Indonesia needs a minimum of 79-91 gold medals to reach the top three. Therefore, further analysis is needed to find the remaining gold medals needed.

So far, according to Surono, there have been no significant difficulties in finding additional potential gold medal contenders.

However, he added, sometimes sports branch executive boards (PBs) like to set high targets, but this is unrealistic based on the competitive landscape.

To find additional potential, we re-examine all athlete data to identify potential replacements to open up opportunities for gold medals. The probabilities are divided into 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%, especially for events that are not measurable,” he explained.

This analysis and synchronization process will continue until next week. Surono estimates that the analysis results will be 89–90 percent complete this week.

After obtaining definitive results, the review team will report to the Minister of Youth and Sports for discussion in a plenary meeting, while also determining the medal target and the number of athletes to be sent.

Surono added that his team still appreciates the PB’s optimism, but all decisions must be based on data and realistic opportunities.

Regarding the final number of athletes, the list has been submitted to the SEA Games committee. Now, we just need to confirm who truly has a chance of winning a medal. From there, the number of athletes can change, increase or decrease, based on the results of the KOI evaluation,” he said.

Previously, the Minister of Youth and Sports explained that with the additional SEA Games budget of Rp60 billion, the Indonesian contingent is estimated to have 700-800 athletes for the 52 sports that the Indonesian team will compete in.
